Nurse anaesthesia regulation:
Nurse anaesthesia education:
The nurse anaesthesia education programme is thirty-two (32) months inclusive of six (6) months internship period. The programme was adapted from the Mount Marty College, Yankton, South Dakota, under the guidance of Sister Mary Arthur Schramm – Former Director in collaboration with the Director of the Jamaica School of Nurse Anaesthesia, the University of the West Indies (UWI), Department of Advanced Nursing Education (DANE).
(i) A Registered Nurse
(ii) Certified Midwife
(iii) 5 – 8 years post registration experience
Duration: 32 months
Diploma (to be upgraded in 2007 to Masters degree)
Number of classroom hours:
Theory – Topics:
Principles of Anaesthesia
Number of clinical training hours: 1760 hrs.
Numbers of cases required: 600
Accreditation: U.W.I./University of Technology
Nurse anaesthesia practice:
Nurse anaesthetists practice according to their expertise, the Government status, regulations and institutional policies, administering anaesthesia and related care in the following categories:
(i) Pre-anaesthesia evaluation/preparation
(iii) Post-anaesthesia care/clinical support functions
Recertification: Biennial re-licensure – Nursing Council of Jamaica requirements
Activities of the National Association:
The Association is established for the purpose of carrying out such of the following charitable objectives, namely:
(i) To promote, develop and maintain high standards of professional service and cost-effective anaesthesia care of patients.
(ii) To serve as the voice of the Nurse Anaesthetists in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands in matters relative to the profession and to influence conditions of employment that are likely to attract and retain qualified persons into the profession.
(iii) To stimulate and maintain professional competence through continuing research, education and training of Nurse Anaesthetists.
(iv) To protect the socioeconomic welfare of Nurse Anaesthetists.
(v) To promote cooperation between Nurse Anaesthetists internationally through affiliation with the international organizations (IFNA, AANA, ICN and CANA)
(i) Annual Scientific Conference
(ii) Annual Workshop/Annual General Meeting
(iii) Community Outreach Programme (sponsorship of two high school students from 1st – 5th form)
